How it works:

UVGI is a disinfection method that uses short-wavelength ultraviolet light to kill or inactivate microorganisms by destroying nucleic acids and disrupting the DNA, leaving the microorganism unable to perform vital cellular functions.

UVGI products are designed and sized to provide enough UCV light in moving air systems which will deter the growth of microorganisms like molds, viruses, bacteria, and other pathogens. Together with a good filtration system, UCV lights are capable of sanitizing air systems so that the air can be sterilized by up to 99% of airborne bio-contaminants in a single pass.

There are two types of UV lights that can be installed in your HVAC system.

UV HVAC system

Coil Sterilization

– The light is designed to clean and sterilize the cooling coil. The coil sterilization light will run 24/7 and is the most common type of light in an HVAC System. The lights must be installed and mounted so that the UV Rays shine on the cooling coil and condensate pan so that it is constantly sterilizing the components.

Air Sterilization

– The light is installed so that the air flowing past the lights is sterilized. It is interlocked with the supply fan and cycles on and off with the fan. Because the lights are installed in the return air duct running parallel to the airflow, it will maximize the exposure time with the air thereby resulting in a higher disinfectant rate.
UV air purifiers that are installed in an HVAC system and are properly sized for the designed airflow will destroy airborne viruses but cannot guarantee anyone from becoming infected. Because the UV lighting is installed in the HVAC system it cannot disinfect surfaces that can easily transmit viruses. A good cleaning of frequently touched surfaces and diligent hand washing still must be practiced.

UV lights for Ice Machines

Ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) light technology works silently 24/7 eliminating slime and other biological contaminants from condensate drains and other countertop ice and water dispenser interiors. It offers a healthier, ozone-free alternative to toxic, odorous and corrosive cleaning chemicals, as multiple healthcare-field studies have shown.

Space Air Purifiers with UV lamps

Designed for single-point use in a room these systems use multi-stage filtration and UV lamps to purify and clean the indoor air dealing with pollen, organic chemicals, mold, viruses and other pollutants that are found in residences and office environments.

Air Scrubbers Negative Air Machines with Hepa Filters

An air scrubber is a portable filtration system that removes particles, gasses, and/or chemicals from the air within a given area. These machines draw air in from the surrounding environment and pass it through a series of filtration stages to remove contaminants. The size of an air scrubber system will depend on the size of the space being serviced.

A negative air machine uses ducting to remove contaminated air from a sealed containment area. The filtered air is exhausted outside of the containment area. This creates negative air pressure (a vacuum effect), which helps limit the spread of contaminants to other areas inside the structure.

More efficient Filters

MERV Filter Ratings

MERV means Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value which was developed by the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioner Engineers – ASHRAE. MERV values vary from 1 to 16. The higher the MERV value is the value the more efficient the filter will be in trapping airborne particles.
